MATLAB Graphical User Interface for EE Students

The following Graphical User Interface MATLAB programs have been developed for the computational aids in the electrical engineering topics outlined in the menu at left.

These GUI programs with point-and-click features are designed for ease of use. These programs together with the traditional hand-written problems can help students to develop a stronger intuition and deeper understanding of these topics.

GUI Program for Controller Design

This self-extracting installation file contains a graphical user interface program for the design of a first-order controller in the forward path of a closed-loop control system. After downloading this file double-click on the file to install the programs in a directory of your choice. Use MATLAB Path Browser to add this directory to the MATLAB path. This GUI program designs the following controllers: Proportional, phase-lag, phase-lead, PD, PI, and PID controllers.  To run the controller design program at the MATLAB prompt type

>> rldesigngui

The following graphics window is displayed. The user can specify the plant and the feedback sensor transfer functions and select a controller.


Power System Analysis

Upon selecting any of the above controllers, e.g. the phase-lead controller, the user is prompted to enter the desired dominant closed-loop pole. The controller transfer function, and the compensated open loop and closed loop transfer functions are obtained as shown. By pressing the Compensated System Responses Button various responses can be obtained.

GUI Program for Transformer

This self-extracting installation file contains two graphical user interface programs for transformer and induction motor analyses.  After downloading this file double-click on the file to install the programs in a directory of your choice. Use MATLAB Path Browser to add this directory to the MATLAB path.

The transformer program obtains the transformer equivalent circuit from open-circuit and short-circuit tests. It also finds the transformer performance characteristics using the transformer parameters. To run the transformer tests and performance analysis at the MATLAB prompt type:

GUI Program for Induction Motor

This self-extracting installation file contains two graphical user interface programs for transformer and induction motor analyses.  After downloading this file double-click on the file to install the programs in a directory of your choice. Use MATLAB Path Browser to add this directory to the MATLAB path. Among the important aspects in the steady-state analysis of a three-phase induction motor are the variation of current, power, losses and torque associated with various operating conditions.  In the induction motor program the parameters of the equivalent circuit can be entered on the circuit diagram. The program draws the Thevenin's equivalent circuit. Performance characteristics are then obtained for the specified slip and the torque slip curve is plotted on the screen. The analysis can be repeated for different slips. To run the induction motor program at the MATLAB prompt type:

This self-extracting installation file contains a graphical user interface program for the natural and step response of parallel and series RLC circuit. After downloading this file double-click on the file to install the programs in a directory of your choice. Use MATLAB Path Browser to add this directory to the MATLAB path. To run the program at the MATLAB prompt type
